It amazes me that we’re living in a time where the cheapest econoboxes are getting technology packages that let the cars park themselves, but something as simple as having headlights turn on automatically when wipers are on isn’t standard or even widespread.
Then again, I keep my headlights on at all times in all weather, so I think everyone is an idiot.

It’s bizarre. Fully automatic headlight/high-beam/DRL operation should be pretty easy as far as these things go, yet so many cars are completely in the stone age.

I agree with wipers on headlights on... but as a motorcyclist I’d wish you turn them off when the sun shines. Motorcycles typically have headlights on if it’s running. That’s to make motorcyclists more visible. But now that cars have DRL and Auto headlights that are often always on, Motorcycles are just another light out there. That’s why the Goldwing riders so often put a stobe on their highbeams, so that they can stand out from the sea of headlights. I find that incredibly annoying... and they embarrass me as a fellow rider.

lights should be on all the time, day or night, rain, snow sun...

Problem is everyone is used to not thinking about their headlights anymore since lots of cars have automatic ones.
In my cars with automatic lights I always make sure they’re on in the rain, but there have been times in rental cars without automatic lights where I’ve momentarily forgotten to turn the headlights on at night.
Oops.
(Usually when this happens I correct it quickly and then go back into turn-on-the-lights-myself mode for the duration of my rental.)

That’s what I find completely bewildering. I mean, I sort of believe that everything electrical is based 70% on magic, but it can’t be that complicated to splice a headlight switch into a wiper switch.

I love the law in my country of lights on (not DRL’s) when you enter a highway or back road, so much easier to see cars when you are in a road trip as the weather can quickly change as you travel.

Of they have a dash/gauges that are lit 24/7 so they THINK they have lights on, especially if they’re coming out of an older car...

Any car that has automatic headlights should automatically turn the headlights on when you turn the wipers on (and leave it in the on position, not just spraying your windshield or something).
It amazes me how some cars still don’t do that.

I’d like it if there were a standard “your headlights are on” light in all cars. My Mazdaspeed 6 had one but I’m pretty sure that’s the only car of mine that did. It also lacked automatic headlights.

That would make sense but I’m not sure why it’s not a more common feature. Of all the cars I’ve had with automatic headlights (Jeeps and BMWs) I don’t think any of them turned on the headlights with the wipers. The automatic headlights often come on in the rain because it’s cloudy and dark-ish but not always.

I once was bussed to school in a bus that had a diagram above the driver’s head of the front and back of the bus. It had colored LEDs in all the exterior lighting positions and came on/went out/blinked in accordance to what was actually going on outside.
I’d like for cars to have that, mandatory. Especially if it showed a burnt out bulb.
My 3 has a light that comes on, but its confusing. Its light green, and comes on with the parking lights, and doesn’t change when the headlights are on. So its a “Yes, your lights are on... but WHICH ONES???” light. Useless.

I remember a similar light display on some of my childhood school buses. I always thought it was kinda cool.

We’d always yell at the driver when he left the 4-ways on after picking up a kid. Good times.

See I’d prefer a “your headlights are off” light. Or, even better, if the light sensor detects your headlights SHOULD be on but you’ve disabled the automatic headlights because you’re a monster, you get a light on and maybe even a chime.

That sounds annoying as hell, kinda like how my BMW chimes and warns me every single time the temperature is 37°F or less. I live in Wisconsin, it’s 37°F or less for basically 4 months straight.
